NAIA Welcomes Inclusion of New Animal and Public Health Protections in Farm Bill Framework

PORTLAND, OR, UNITED STATES, June 11, 2024 – Today, the National Animal Interest Alliance (NAIA) commends Ranking Member Boozman (R-AR) for the inclusion of safeguards for animal and public health in his Farm Bill framework. Patti Strand, NAIA President and Co-Founder, said in the following statement:

“NAIA is pleased that key provisions of the Healthy Dog Importation Act (HDIA) have now been included in every 2024 Farm Bill proposal released by Agriculture Committee leadership. Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Stabenow (D-MI) included safeguards in her proposal released on May 1st, and House Agriculture Committee Chairman Thompson (R-PA) did the same in his proposal which was reported out of Committee on May 23rd.

Thanks to the diligent work of the lead sponsors of the HDIA, Senators Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Tina Smith (D-MN) and Representatives Dusty Johnson (R-SD) and Ann Kuster (D-NH), and a broad coalition of veterinary, livestock, and companion animal advocates, we see bipartisan and bicameral support for the addressing the growing threat of pests and diseases that are transmitted into the United States via unchecked dog importation.”

In addition to the bipartisan, bicameral group of Members and Senators supporting the HDIA, the legislation is also supported by a broad alliance of national and state organizations representing the veterinary, livestock, and companion animal communities.

NAIA stands ready to work with lawmakers in both chambers to pass a bipartisan farm bill this year.
