{"id":690,"date":"2014-08-01T13:49:22","date_gmt":"2014-08-01T13:49:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/?p=690"},"modified":"2014-08-01T16:08:07","modified_gmt":"2014-08-01T16:08:07","slug":"dog-attacks-in-a-world-without-common-sense-or-accountability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/animals-and-culture\/dog-attacks-in-a-world-without-common-sense-or-accountability\/","title":{"rendered":"Dog Attacks in a World Without Common Sense or Accountability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recent\u00a0dog attacks,\u00a0<a title=\"Livonia Man Out Jogging Killed In Dog Attack\" href=\"http:\/\/detroit.cbslocal.com\/2014\/07\/24\/livonia-man-dies-after-attack-by-2-bull-mastiffs\/\" target=\"_blank\">one that left a jogger dead<\/a> and a second that resulted in a\u00a0<a title=\"3 dogs maul 9-year-old Roswell boy\" href=\"http:\/\/krqe.com\/2014\/06\/11\/3-dogs-maul-9-year-old-roswell-boy\/\" target=\"_blank\">child being mauled by three dogs<\/a>\u00a0highlight issues that we have been studying for a long time:\u00a0<a title=\"Bolstering the Black Market in Dogs\" href=\"http:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/animal-policy\/bolstering-the-black-market-in-dogs\/#.U9qdEPl_7fI\" target=\"_blank\">enforcement of animal control laws<\/a>, and <a title=\"Mission creep: Dog rescues and animal shelters risk public health and safety\" href=\"http:\/\/www.naiaonline.org\/articles\/article\/Mission-creep-Dog-rescues-and-animal-shelters-risk-public-health-and-safety\" target=\"_blank\">rescue gone wild<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of the jogger&#8217;s tragic death, <a title=\"1 of 2 exotic dogs that mauled jogger attacked before\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2014\/07\/25\/dogs-killed-jogger-attacked-woman\/13148093\/\" target=\"_blank\">one of the\u00a0dogs involved had been in a prior attack, with the victim suing the owners<\/a>, making one wonder how these dogs could still be running free.\u00a0Could the jogger&#8217;s death have been averted by enforcing the law? According to our resident legal expert and NAIA board member, Julian Prager, &#8220;Based on the reported information, proper reporting and enforcement of existing Michigan law could have prevented\u00a0more attacks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div style=\"color: #222222;\">But as the woman who sued for being bitten in 2012 pointed out, the owners still have not even put up a fence around the yard, as was stipulated in her lawsuit. Had the owner been forced to comply with just that\u00a0<em>one<\/em> small measure, we wouldn&#8217;t be talking about this story today.<\/div>\n<p>As for the young boy, he was mauled by three vicious dogs that had escaped from a nearby rescue. Thankfully, he <a title=\"Roswell boy recalls frightening dog attack\" href=\"http:\/\/krqe.com\/2014\/06\/12\/roswell-boy-attacked-by-dogs-returns-home\/\" target=\"_blank\">survived and is recovering<\/a>. But disturbingly, his\u00a0family states:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>At least one of the dogs that attacked Colby had been surrendered to animal control by its owners, because of its &#8220;dangerous and vicious nature.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9nReItAEkTU?rel=0\" width=\"470\" height=\"264\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>If it\u00a0is true that animal control knew the dog was vicious, but still released it to the rescue, we must take a moment to weep for the death of common sense.
