{"id":516,"date":"2014-05-27T20:39:51","date_gmt":"2014-05-27T20:39:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/?p=516"},"modified":"2014-05-28T01:12:16","modified_gmt":"2014-05-28T01:12:16","slug":"health-alert-regarding-imported-dogs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/animal-policy\/health-alert-regarding-imported-dogs\/","title":{"rendered":"Health Alert Regarding Imported Dogs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a title=\"CDC Health Alert\" href=\"http:\/\/naiaonline.org\/uploads\/Main_Upload_Directory\/healthAlertQuestionableDocs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">health alert has been issued by the\u00a0Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> (CDC) regarding\u00a0the\u00a0increasing number of dogs being imported from rabies endemic countries with questionable documentation.<\/p>\n<p>A particularly disturbing line in the alert is this:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>These documents state that the puppies are older than 4 months of age and<br \/>\nfully immunized against rabies. However, upon examination, these animals were found to be less than 4 months old and sometimes as young as 4-8 weeks of age. Documentation has also included falsification of birth location and breed registration.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Clearly they are seeing a lot more than honest, innocent mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>One of NAIA\u2019s <a title=\"Letter to the CDC\" href=\"http:\/\/www.naiaonline.org\/pdfs\/proposedrulemaking-final3.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">longstanding\u00a0campaigns<\/a> has been to awaken the public to the threats posed by the irresponsible importation of animals into the American\u00a0pet marketplace &#8212; especially from countries still suffering from diseases and parasites that have been largely eradicated in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>NAIA appreciates the attention the CDC is giving this matter, and looks forward to the publication of the finalized USDA rule outlying the importation of dogs less than 6 months of age for resale (which includes transfer by adoption).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/PuppyShot.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-524\" src=\"http:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/PuppyShot-300x245.jpg\" alt=\"PuppyShot\" width=\"300\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/PuppyShot-300x245.jpg 300w, https:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/PuppyShot.jpg 380w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-192\" title=\"NAIA Logo\" src=\"http:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/NAIA-logo-header.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"251\" height=\"67\" \/><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;upon examination, these animals were found to be less than 4 months old and sometimes as young as 4-8 weeks of age.
