{"id":1930,"date":"2019-04-16T18:16:09","date_gmt":"2019-04-16T18:16:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/?p=1930"},"modified":"2019-04-16T18:16:09","modified_gmt":"2019-04-16T18:16:09","slug":"heartworm-awareness-month-are-your-pets-protected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/shelter-rescue\/heartworm-awareness-month-are-your-pets-protected\/","title":{"rendered":"Heartworm Awareness Month: Are Your Pets Protected?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>April is National Heartworm Awareness month\u00a0\u2014 are your pets up on their preventative treatments?<\/p>\n<p>The Companion Animal Parasite Council&#8217;s (CAPC) March report is out with a rather ominous top-10 list: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prweb.com\/releases\/overland_park_ks_ranked_1_in_capcs_top_10_cities_heartworm_report_april_is_national_heartworm_awareness_month\/prweb16239950.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the cities with\u00a0the highest percentage increase in positive heartworm tests last month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Portland, Oregon made the top 10. This is important to note, as Portland had no native cases of heartworm prior to the introduction of irresponsible dog rescue operations that relocated dogs from distant states and countries to the Northwest. The idea that living in a &#8220;heartworm free&#8221; region of the country is all one needs to keep their pets free from this parasite, is alas, no longer a safe bet.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the current most common standard preventatives for heartworm are controlled poisons with known side-effects (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.akc.org\/expert-advice\/health\/heartworm-medication-side-effects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">especially ivermectin<\/a>) and potential ecotoxicity issues, as well, but making sure your pet is protected is far better than the alternative.
