Then, like clockwork, the story of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greensboro.com\/ap\/lifestyles\/latex-detecting-dog-is-bay-area-woman-s-weapon-against\/article_8d043775-30ba-5b48-b3b5-37060d35869f.html\" target=\"_blank\">Patsy Hayes and her latex-detection dog, Andromeda<\/a>\u00a0popped up the next day. Patsy Hayes is severely allergic to latex, and Andromeda lets her know latex is nearby, in order to steer clear of it. This story is a timely reminder of the value of service dogs, and of the varied, perhaps unexpected services they can perform.<\/p>\n<p>The word &#8220;allergy&#8221; conjures up images of swollen eyes, dripping noses, maybe a rash &#8212; and in most cases, that is the extent of an allergic reaction.
