{"id":1439,"date":"2016-05-02T18:57:28","date_gmt":"2016-05-02T18:57:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/?p=1439"},"modified":"2016-05-02T18:57:28","modified_gmt":"2016-05-02T18:57:28","slug":"shout-out-to-the-canine-breeder-excellence-seminar-at-penn-vet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/animal-husbandry\/shout-out-to-the-canine-breeder-excellence-seminar-at-penn-vet\/","title":{"rendered":"Shout-out to the Canine Breeder Excellence Seminar at Penn Vet!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dog breeders attending a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philly.com\/philly\/health\/20160501_At_Penn__The_science_of_breeding_a_healthy_dog.html\" target=\"_blank\">conference\u00a0at the University of Pennsylvania<\/a>\u00a0last weekend got one heck of a lesson in the finer points of animal husbandry:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 11.5px; padding-left: 30px; padding-right: 30px;\"><em>[&#8230;]\u00a0a serious, sophisticated group of about 40 dog breeders who had traveled from as far away as North Carolina to learn about reproduction, genetics, behavior, and the dog microbiome at a scientific conference at the University of Pennsylvania.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Serious and sophisticated?\u00a0Do those adjectives\u00a0sound snobby, maybe even a little cold? They\u00a0shouldn&#8217;t &#8212; at\u00a0the heart of the work so many purebred dog breeders put into the dogs they love is the &#8220;serious and sophisticated&#8221; knowledge offered by seminars like this!<\/p>\n<p>Doing it the right way, with the health and well-being of your dogs and puppies (and their puppies&#8217;s puppies!) as prime concern is a lot more complicated than just &#8220;throwing two intact dogs together,&#8221; especially with the smaller populations many breeds of dogs are working with.
