{"id":1291,"date":"2015-09-18T21:24:02","date_gmt":"2015-09-18T21:24:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/?p=1291"},"modified":"2015-09-18T21:39:03","modified_gmt":"2015-09-18T21:39:03","slug":"foreign-dogs-good-u-s-dogs-bad-radical-dog-trafficking-continues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/shelter-rescue\/foreign-dogs-good-u-s-dogs-bad-radical-dog-trafficking-continues\/","title":{"rendered":"Foreign Dogs Good; U.S. Dogs Bad: Radical Dog Trafficking Continues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After feverishly working to eliminate local pet stores over their alleged inhumane sourcing of dogs, look who is importing\u00a0dogs into the United States from Korea for the pet trade:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sandiego6.com\/news\/local\/328105931.html\" target=\"_blank\">San Diego Humane Society takes custody of 29 dogs from the Korean meat trade.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sounds like a great cause and makes for great press and fundraising opportunities &#8212; but whatever they\u00a0claim as their primary motive for doing this, it certainly cannot be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Protecting consumers and pets from zoonotic and infectious diseases (as you may remember, <a href=\"https:\/\/ahdc.vet.cornell.edu\/news\/civchicago.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Korea was the source<\/a> of a major canine <a href=\"http:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/animal-policy\/asian-canine-influenza-outbreak-a-reminder-of-the-importance-of-responsible-animal-transport\/\" target=\"_blank\">influenza outbreak earlier this year<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Providing consumers with humanely sourced pets<\/li>\n<li>A desire to provide the public with healthy, well-socialized dogs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So if humane societies are so hard up for dogs to adopt that they are importing from overseas,\u00a0is it safe to assume we have solved all of our domestic pet problems?
