{"id":1281,"date":"2015-08-31T19:31:50","date_gmt":"2015-08-31T19:31:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/?p=1281"},"modified":"2015-08-31T20:04:03","modified_gmt":"2015-08-31T20:04:03","slug":"learning-valuable-skills-beehind-bars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/agriculture\/learning-valuable-skills-beehind-bars\/","title":{"rendered":"Learning Valuable Skills Beehind Bars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So by now we all know about those neat <a href=\"http:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/human-animal-bond\/a-great-pairing\/\">programs where\u00a0prison inmates train dogs<\/a>, but I bet you didn&#8217;t know there are now 12 prisons in Washington state, part of the &#8220;Sustainability in Prisons Project,&#8221; where <a href=\"http:\/\/www.12newsnow.com\/story\/29921833\/bees-behind-bars-give-prisoners-a-second-chance\" target=\"_blank\">prisoners are trained in the art of beekeeping<\/a>!\u00a0Some are even considering turning these skills into a career when they are released:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 11.5px; padding-left: 20px; padding-right: 20px;\"><em>Boysen plans to start his own hives and sell organic honey for a living. He&#8217;s excited about helping struggling bee populations recover their future. They&#8217;ve helped him recover a future too.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 11.5px; padding-left: 20px; padding-right: 20px;\"><em>&#8220;You feel like you&#8217;re doing something not only for your own benefit, but for the rest of the world,&#8221; he said.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Now it may be tempting to laugh this off as an example of &#8220;good intentions gone kooky,&#8221; but it is a lot more than that:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fda.gov\/AnimalVeterinary\/ResourcesforYou\/AnimalHealthLiteracy\/ucm309134.htm\" target=\"_blank\">bees are incredibly important to agriculture<\/a>.
