{"id":1224,"date":"2015-07-31T18:11:54","date_gmt":"2015-07-31T18:11:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/?p=1224"},"modified":"2015-07-31T18:19:01","modified_gmt":"2015-07-31T18:19:01","slug":"a-great-pairing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/human-animal-bond\/a-great-pairing\/","title":{"rendered":"A Great Pairing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reading this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/07\/28\/science\/dogs-trained-in-prison-to-protect-lives.html\" target=\"_blank\">NY Times article on pairing prison inmates up with bomb-sniffing dogs in training<\/a>, it is hard not to be struck by the reciprocity. Everybody is getting something positive. The inmates give the dogs loads of attention and training, and show higher morale with a &#8220;virtually nonexistent&#8221; incident rate. The dogs show more maturity and greater endurance.\u00a0Everybody gets something out of it, and not just on a practical level: inmates receive experience as responsible citizens, perhaps a sense of atonement, while, if you follow the M.R.I. results, the dogs perceive\u00a0much of the experience &#8212; at least the learned odor\u00a0portion &#8212; as one giant\u00a0reward!<\/p>\n<p>As inspiring as programs like this are, they are but one of the many ways humans and animals make each other stronger, happier &#8212; or just plain\u00a0<em>better<\/em>\u00a0every day. Youth in corrections care for and train shelter dogs for adoption, positively transforming both in the process.
