{"id":1142,"date":"2015-04-23T19:53:39","date_gmt":"2015-04-23T19:53:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/?p=1142"},"modified":"2015-04-23T22:50:50","modified_gmt":"2015-04-23T22:50:50","slug":"irresponsible-dog-importation-and-illness-an-expert-speaks-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naiaonline.org\/blog\/animal-policy\/irresponsible-dog-importation-and-illness-an-expert-speaks-out\/","title":{"rendered":"Irresponsible Dog Importation and Illness: an Expert Speaks Out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the wake of the\u00a0<a title=\"Dog flu outbreak spreading, N.J. officials warn\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/news\/index.ssf\/2015\/04\/dog_flu_outbreak_spreading_nj_officials_warn.html\" target=\"_blank\">Midwest canine flu outbreak<\/a> that has sickened more than 1,100 dogs, we are getting the <a title=\"Canine influenza expert calls for better border protection\" href=\"http:\/\/news.vin.com\/VINNews.aspx?articleId=36524\" target=\"_blank\">straight talk we need about dog importation from a canine influenza expert<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 11.5px; padding-left: 20px; padding-right: 20px;\"><em>\u201cWe have absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt, proof that a foreign animal disease has been imported into the U.S.,\u201d Dr. Ed Dubovi said. \u201cI don\u2019t think anyone can look at this situation and say we\u2019re protecting our animal population the best we can.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 11.5px; padding-left: 20px; padding-right: 20px;\">[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 11.5px; padding-left: 20px; padding-right: 20px;\"><em>\u201cMy concern all along was that someday this virus might make its way here,\u201d he said. \u201cWe don\u2019t know how it happened, but it certainly could have come from a dog or a cat. There are multiple international groups who are rescuing dogs from the meat market in Korea and shipping them into the U.S., and we have sketchy quarantine requirements if any at all. Restrictions on the movements of companion animals across borders are somewhat nonexistent.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Irresponsible importation is <a title=\"Humane or Insane?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.naiaonline.org\/naia-library\/articles\/humane-or-insane\/\" target=\"_blank\">an issue<\/a> we have been concerned about <a title=\"More cities importing pound puppies\" href=\"http:\/\/usatoday30.usatoday.com\/news\/nation\/2003-01-30-dogs-usat_x.htm\" target=\"_blank\">for years<\/a>. For those who have dismissed or downplayed this threat, the statements from Dr. Dubovi should serve as a wake-up call.<\/p>\n<p>Now the question is: how can these words translate into action?<\/p>\n<p>Saving the lives of dogs is a noble goal, nobody will argue with that. But when good intentions lead to <a title=\"Importation of dogs into the United States: risks from rabies and other zoonotic diseases\" href=\"http:\/\/www.naiaonline.org\/uploads\/WhitePapers\/ImportationCDCRabies.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">illness<\/a>\u00a0and even <a title=\"Life-lift for dogs is fatal, 100+ die\" href=\"http:\/\/www.naiaonline.org\/uploads\/WhitePapers\/PuertoRicanImportTragedyReport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">death<\/a>, you&#8217;re doing it wrong.
